Handyman jobs

Furniture assembly in Singapore

Flat-pack furniture is cheap to ship and slow to build. A wardrobe can arrive as a hundred and fifty parts and a booklet of drawings, and the hours it takes are hours most people would rather spend elsewhere, especially in a new flat with ten other boxes waiting.

Tell us what you've bought and where it's going, and we'll pass the job to a partner handyman. The handyman quotes, brings the tools, puts it together, and fixes tall pieces to the wall so they can't tip.

What furniture assembly covers

The usual jobs under this heading. Tick it in the enquiry and describe yours; if it isn’t here, describe it anyway.

Beds and bed frames

Platform beds, storage beds with gas-lift bases, bunk beds and children's loft beds. Storage beds take longest, because the lift mechanism has to be set to the mattress weight.

Wardrobes and cabinets

Hinged and sliding wardrobes, shoe cabinets, TV consoles and sideboards, with doors hung and adjusted so they close evenly.

Desks and office chairs

Writing desks, sit-stand desks with motor frames, gaming desks, and office chairs, including desks for a home office or a small office fit-out.

Shelving and bookcases

Open shelving, bookcases and storage units, levelled on uneven floors and anchored to the wall when they're tall or will hold heavy things.

Dining and outdoor sets

Dining tables, chairs, benches and balcony sets, including extendable tables whose runners need adjusting.

Taking furniture apart

Dismantling a bed or wardrobe so it fits through a door or into a lift, before a move or before it's thrown out.

It doesn't matter where the furniture came from: a Swedish flat-pack store, a local furniture shop or an online marketplace. Mention the brand and model, or send a link, and the handyman can see how big a job it is.

Furniture assembly: a small fix or a bigger job?

What this site arranges

A handyman job

  • Building flat-pack furniture you've bought
  • Anchoring a tall unit to the wall
  • Adjusting doors and drawers that don't close
  • Dismantling a piece for a move
A wall with its plaster hacked off to the bricks, a bin of debris and new tiles: a renovation

A bigger job

A renovation

  • Built-in wardrobes made to measure
  • Carpentry that changes the room's layout
  • Removing built-in cabinets fixed to walls and floors

Built-in carpentry made to measure is a renovation job, not an assembly one. Junk to Clear, a renovation and disposal company we refer jobs to, takes renovation enquiries.

What affects the price

We don’t publish prices. The partner handyman quotes once it knows the job. These are the things it will ask about.

  • How many pieces there are, and how big each one is. A bedside table and a three-door wardrobe are very different jobs.
  • How complicated each piece is. Sliding doors, gas-lift beds and motorised desks take longer than a plain bookcase.
  • Whether anything needs fixing to the wall, and what the wall is made of.
  • Whether the furniture has to be carried up, or the old furniture taken apart first.
  • Whether you need it done on a particular day or time.

Photos that help the quote

  • The product name or a link to the listing, for each piece.
  • The room it's going in, with the spot marked if it's tight.
  • The wall behind any tall piece, if you want it anchored.

Keep them on your phone: the handyman may ask for them when it contacts you.

How to prepare, and what happens on the day

Before the visit

  • Leave the boxes unopened in the room where the furniture will stand, so no parts get lost.
  • Clear a space on the floor about twice the size of the finished piece.
  • Find the assembly instructions, or the product's name if they're missing.
  • Check the furniture will fit through the bedroom door, and up the stairs if there are any.

On the day

  1. 1 The handyman checks the parts against the list before starting, since missing pieces are easier to chase before the build than halfway through.
  2. 2 Each piece is assembled, levelled and checked: doors aligned, drawers running, legs tight.
  3. 3 Tall pieces are fixed to the wall with the brackets that came with them, or suitable ones the handyman brings.
  4. 4 Packaging is flattened and left for you, or taken away if you've agreed that in the quote.

Afterwards

Flat-pack joints settle in the first few weeks. Tighten the cam locks and screws once after a month, and don't move a built wardrobe across the room in one piece: take the doors off first, or have it moved by someone who knows how.

Furniture assembly in homes and offices

The same job differs between a flat, a landed house and an office. Here’s what changes.

HDB flats

Bedrooms in HDB flats are compact, so tall wardrobes often have to be built where they'll stand. Walls are usually concrete, which holds anti-tip brackets well once drilled.

Condos

Many condos ask you to book the service lift and register a contractor before work. Check with the management office before the visit date.

Landed homes

More space and more rooms usually means more pieces. Stairs can make it easier to carry boxes up and build upstairs than to carry a finished piece.

Offices

Desks, chairs, storage and meeting tables, often several of each. Work can be scheduled after hours or on a weekend so the office keeps running.

Questions about furniture assembly

Can the handyman bring the furniture from the shop?

Furniture assembly is the building part. If you need the furniture collected as well, say so in the enquiry and we'll check whether the partner can do it.

What if a part is missing or broken?

The handyman checks the parts before starting. If something is missing, most retailers send spares free, and the handyman can finish that piece on a return visit.

Will my wardrobe be fixed to the wall?

Tall pieces should be. Furniture tipping over is a real risk with children in the home, and most flat-pack wardrobes come with an anti-tip kit for this reason. Ask for it in the enquiry.

Can you take my old furniture away?

The handyman can take it apart. For getting rid of it, Junk to Clear, a disposal company we refer jobs to, collects old furniture.
