Appliance repair and installation

When a washing machine stops mid-cycle or a fridge stops cooling, the first question is whether it's worth repairing. That depends on what's failed, how old the machine is, and whether parts for it are still made.

Tell us the appliance, its brand and model, and what it's doing, and we'll pass it to a partner, who quotes the repair or the installation.

What appliance repair covers

The usual jobs under this heading. Tick it in the enquiry and describe yours; if it isn’t here, describe it anyway.

Washing machines

Machines that won't drain, won't spin, leak or show an error code, and new machines installed with the inlet hose, drain and levelling done.

Dryers

Dryers that run but don't heat, or that stop mid-cycle, and new dryers stacked on a washer with the proper kit.

Fridges

Fridges that don't cool, leak water inside or build up ice, checked to find whether it's a seal, a fan or something that's not worth fixing.

Hobs and cooker hoods

Hobs that won't ignite and hoods with dead fans or lights repaired, and new ones fitted into the existing cut-out.

Other appliances

Dishwashers, ovens and water dispensers. Say what it is and what's wrong, and we'll check whether the partner handles it.

Gas hobs connected to town gas or a gas cylinder should only be connected or disconnected by people who do gas work. Say in the enquiry if your hob is gas, and we'll check with the partner.

What this site arranges

A handyman job

  • Diagnosing a washer, dryer or fridge
  • Replacing a worn part
  • Installing a new washer or dryer
  • Fitting a hob or hood into the same space
A wall with its plaster hacked off to the bricks, a bin of debris and new tiles: a renovation

A bigger job

A renovation

  • Moving the kitchen's layout
  • Cutting a new space in a worktop
  • Moving a washer to a new room with new pipes

Moving appliances to new spots usually means new pipes, wiring and carpentry. Junk to Clear, a renovation and disposal company we refer jobs to, takes renovation enquiries.

What affects the price

We don’t publish prices. The partner handyman quotes once it knows the job. These are the things it will ask about.

  • The appliance, its brand and model, and what's wrong with it.
  • Whether the fault can be found and fixed in one visit, or a part has to be ordered.
  • The cost of the part, which varies widely between brands and models.
  • For installation, whether the space, pipes and power are ready, and whether the old machine needs disconnecting.
  • Whether it's built in, which makes it slower to take out and put back.

Photos that help the quote

  • The model plate, usually inside the door, on the back or on the side.
  • Any error code on the display.
  • For installation, the space, the tap, the drain and the power socket.

Keep them on your phone: the handyman may ask for them when it contacts you.

How to prepare, and what happens on the day

Before the visit

  • Write down the brand, the model number and roughly how old the appliance is.
  • Empty a washing machine, fridge or dishwasher, and put towels down for any water left inside.
  • Clear the space around the appliance so it can be pulled out.
  • Have any warranty card or receipt to hand, in case the maker's own service should do the repair.

On the day

  1. 1 The partner checks the fault and tells you what it is and whether it's worth repairing.
  2. 2 If a part is needed, the price is agreed before it's ordered or fitted.
  3. 3 The repair is made, or the new appliance is installed, levelled and connected.
  4. 4 The appliance is run through a cycle, or left running, to check it works.

Afterwards

Clean washing machine filters and dryer lint traps regularly, leave the washer door ajar between washes, and keep space behind a fridge for air to move.

Appliance repair in homes and offices

The same job differs between a flat, a landed house and an office. Here’s what changes.

HDB flats

HDB kitchens and service yards are compact, and washers and dryers are often stacked. Check that the new machine fits the space, including the door's swing.

Condos

Condo kitchens often have built-in appliances in fitted cabinets. Note that in the enquiry, since taking them out takes longer.

Landed homes

More appliances, and sometimes older ones in an outdoor kitchen or a utility room. Machines in a wet kitchen take more humidity and corrosion.

Offices

Pantry fridges, microwaves, water dispensers and dishwashers. Repairs can usually be arranged outside office hours.

Questions about appliance repair

Is my old appliance worth repairing?

It depends on the fault, the price of the part and the machine's age. The partner will say so if a repair isn't worth it, and you decide.

My appliance is still under warranty. Should I use you?

Check with the brand's own service first: work by anyone else may void the warranty.

Can you install a washing machine I bought?

Yes, where the tap, drain and power socket are already in place. Many shops deliver without installing, or charge to install.

Can you take my old appliance away?

The partner can disconnect it. For collection and disposal, Junk to Clear, a disposal company we refer jobs to, can take it.
